Two opposing forces in the universe: entropy and life.

• Entropy is the tendency for things to disorganize — to come apart — over time. In a closed system, entropy always increases, which means things are always coming apart and dissipating over time.

• Life, however, behaves differently. While individual lives eventually wear down and expire, life is generative. From life comes more life. Biologists and others also note that life itself seems to incorporate a capacity for self-organization that moves it along a line toward ever greater organization and complexity.

The effective leader overcomes the forces of entropy by fostering the generative forces of life.
